Beware the Power of Prayer

A few years ago, I began the yearly practice of catching just a few hours’ sleep after the Easter Vigil celebrations, only to head back to church for the 7am Easter Sunday mass to greet the Risen Son. (Yes, I know that’s a terrible pun, but it’s stuck in my head.)

This year, I’d just missed the bus I’d usually take, and there was a dearth of available taxis on the road. When the next bus service arrived, I checked my watch and mentally calculated that, if there were any hiccups along the way or the driver were a little slow, I might be late for mass.

So I said a short prayer, “Lord, please get me to church on time to celebrate your resurrection with everyone else”, then boarded the bus.

The roads were clear, and the bus driver…turned out to be a Formula 1 aspirant. I ended up at church in 2/3rds the time it would normally take, early enough to practice with the resident choir before mass began.

The speed, along with the bus’ soft suspension and the undulating local roads, also made for a white-knuckle ride that left me wide awake without my usual morning coffee.

When the Lord answers your prayers, prepare for the unexpected.

A Prayer for Holy Saturday

Lord Jesus Christ,
we come to Your tomb
bearing our cares, our sorrows, our daily pain,
but You are not there,
for You have Risen, just as You said,
and ransomed us from the slavery of sin.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO!

We ask for Your healing Love,
the all-encompassing Love that conquered even death,
so that we too may transcend our cares, our sorrows, our daily pain,
and lift those around us with our joy at your Resurrection,
so that all may know You, and our heavenly Father through You,
and with all the heavenly hosts sing Your praises forever.

Amen.

A Prayer for Good Friday

Lord Jesus Christ,
You chose not to abandon us to endless death and suffering,
but willed that Your Body be broken and Your Blood be shed,
to save mankind from our sin,
not through our own merit,
but by Your Eternal Love.

We ask for some share of that perfect Love,
that we in turn may share it with those around us,
so that, in the fullness of time,
all humanity may return to You in Your Kingdom,
where we long to glorify God Our Father
in eternal exultation and praise.

Amen.

A Prayer for Maundy Thursday

Lord Jesus Christ,
You humbled Yourself to wash our feet,
and shared with us the food that lasts forever,
Your Precious Body and Blood,
We thank You, we praise You, we glorify You.

Give us the strength, the courage and the will
to stay with You,
to pray with You,
to be mindful of Your Eternal Love,
not just for this hour,
but for every hour of our lives.
For You are our Lord and Saviour,
now and forever.

Amen.

Secular Advice for Sacred Action

Often erroneously attributed to Mother Teresa, The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith is a worldly call to action, that nevertheless cuts to the heart of what I think it means to be Christian to an un-Christian world. It’s all the more remarkable for being written when he was 19 years old.

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.
[…] Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

I believe that we are called to do thus, so that at the end of days, we will have the strength to stand with confidence before the Son of Man [Lk 21:36], not just having proclaimed “Lord, Lord”, but also having done the will of Our Father in heaven. [Mt 7:21]

Amen.
